A QUANTITATIVE RAMAN-SPECTROSCOPIC STUDY OF HYDROGEN-BONDING IN METHANOL AND METHANOL-D1

The intensity of the band at |Δν|{all equal to} 280 cm-1 in the Raman spectra of liquid methanol and methanol-d1 as a function of temperature in the region 178-298 K has been used to determine the equilibrium constant between free and hydrogen-bonded species and the average enthalpies of hydrogen-bond formation. The following values of enthalpies were obtained: ΔH0 = -11.3 ± 0.1 kJ mol-1 for CH3OH and -11.4 ± 0.1 kJ mol-1 for CH3OD. These values are similar to that of the enthalpy of formation of a single hydrogen-bond and confirm that there is one hydrogen-bond per methanol molecule in the liquid over the temperature range studied. © 1990.
