In a 1971 survey of tobacco farmers in southern Ontario, farmers were asked to name their choice of substitute crop if the demand for tobacco were to decline. Generally, it was found that four variables were most important in explaining a farmer's choice of substitute crop. These were, in order: the age of a farmer, the area of land a farmer owned, the amount of labor derived locally, and the amount of expansion recently undertaken on the farm. -Authors
