The separation of flotsam and jetsam particles fed continuously to a mechanically-fluidized bed was studied using both two- and three-component systems. The two-component system consisted of sand and magnetite, and the three-component system consisted of a fluidizing medium (sand), together with larger particles of jetsam (glass) and flotsam (nylon or acrylic resin). A mechanically fluid ed bed was agitated with a stirrer while supported by frictional forces due to upwardly flowing gas [1]. Under favourable conditions separation was complete with the three-component systems, but was relatively poor with the magnetite/sand system, which otherwise segregates strongly in a conventional fluidized bed.
