Leaf expansion on the vigorous shoots produced after pruning has been termed aperiodic; it was established in this investigation that there was a periodicity of the intervals between the expansion of successive leaves approximating to the plastochron. It was also shown that there was a periodicity in growth of the stem in cross-sectional area and in axillary bud development. © 1968 OXFORD UNIVERSITY PRESS.
