By potentiometric and electrochemical impedance measurements, the influence of water vapor on iron corrosion was determined in molten Na2CO3-K2CO3 (58-42 mol%) at 800°C. Surface observation by means of scanning electron microscope showed general attack without the formation of any deposit. When the water partial pressure increased, the corrosion rate increased. Chronopotentiometric and voltammetric experiments showed that the corroding agent was dissolved water. Corrosion resulted from the two simultaneous reactions: 2H2O+2e-→H2+2OH- and: Fe→Fe2++2e-. © 1990.
