A VISCOMETRIC STUDY OF IODINE-SOLVENT INTERACTIONS

摘要
The relative viscosities of dilute solutions of iodine in several organic solvents have been measured and interpreted on the basis of the Theory of Regular Solutions. For the solvents used, the ratio of the molar energy of vaporisation of the solvent to the free energy of activation for viscous flow, ΔE1vap/ΔGvis*, increases with the complexing power of the solvents towards iodine. Solubility parameters, δ2, for iodine, calculated from the relative viscosity by using a recent theory of viscosity of solutions, show an increase with the degree of complex formation estimated by spectrophotometric methods. The value of δ2 in non-complexing solvents indicates that liquid iodine at 25°C has pseudo liquid-metal properties. © 1969.
