A detailed treatment is given of the nucleation rate and subsequent growth of the new phases in the first-order metamagnetic phase transitions at Hc1 and Hc2 in CoCl2•2H2, using the Ising approximation for the magnetic interactions, and taking advantage of the dominance of interactions along linear chains. This model accounts for both the absence of hysteresis at Hc2 and the extent of hysteresis at Hc1 observed in the pulsed-field measurements by Date and Motokawa. © 1969 The American Physical Society.
