FUNCTIONAL INTEGRITY OF RAT MUSCLE AFTER ISOMETRIC IMMOBILIZATION

Wasting was produced in the immobilized muscles of albino rats after surgical installation of a stainless steel appliance which rigidly fixed the right ankle joint. Average muscle weight was reduced to about 70% of normal while isometric tetanic tensions were reduced to about one-half control values. Dynamic constrants were derived from isotonic contractions of the muscles after 3-6 weeks of immobilization and compared with those derived from sham-treated control muscles. These muscles, deprived of shortening but capable of tension development, maintained normal values for the dynamic characteristics of their contractile components despite significant wasting and decreased tension output. © 1969.
