REACTIVITY OF RUO2 AS A PROMOTER FOR METHANOL OXIDATION

The activity of the rutile phase of RuO2 as a promoter for the electrochemical oxidation of methanol on platinised carbon electrodes is discussed. In a series of carbon supported Pt:Ru electrodes crystallisation of the as-prepared hydrous Ru(IV) oxide results in a noticeable decrease in both short term activity for methanol oxidation and increased resistance to poisoning. No evidence for alloy formation during crystallisation has been observed; rather transmission electron microscopy and X-ray microanalysis show that partial segregation of the Pt and Ru can occur. Possible reasons for the poor activity of RuO2 as a promoter for methanol oxidation are discussed. © 1990.
