摘要
Solonetzic soils adversely affect crop growth due to their poor structure. Effects of ripping, liming, liming+ripping, and gypsum+ripping on wheat (Triticum aestivum L.) yield and selected characteristics of a Black Solonetz (Kleskun clay) were studied in the Peace River region of northern Alberta, Canada. Wheat yield during the individual seasons, as well as its mean over the four seasons, showed a significant influence of the amelioration treatments. The four-year means, in decreasing order, were 3.38, 3.24, 3.08, 2.87, and 2.61 Mg ha-1 for the liming+ripping, gypsum+ripping, ripping, liming, and check, respectively. Influence of the amelioration treatments on the profile characteristics was observed even after five years. Bulk density results indicated some loosening of the 22-54 cm soil due to ripping. In comparison to the check, reduction in electrical conductivity (EC) due to gypsum+ripping, liming+ripping, ripping, and liming was observed to be down to 75, 54, 54, and 38 cm depth, respectively. As compared to the check, all treatments except liming displaced Na+, Ca2+, and Mg2+ deeper into the soil, but they had no effect on K+. The distribution of Na+ and Ca2+ in the soil profile indicated that ripping was more effective than liming and that both of them enhanced the effectiveness of each other. In conclusion, although all the amelioration treatments resulted in higher crop yield, and improvement in some of the measured soil properties, gypsum+ripping or liming+ripping were better than either ripping or liming alone.
