EVALUATION OF THE LUNG PARENCHYMA STRIP PREPARATION TO MEASURE BRONCHOACTIVITY

An investigation was made of the direct effects of histamine, serotonin, carbachol, isoproterenol, salbutamol, and terbutaline in isolated lung parenchyma strip preparations of cat, dog, sheep, cow, and horse. The effects of specific antigen were also observed in lung strips of antigen-sensitized cat, dog, cow, and horse. The order of drug responsiveness was sheep ≫ cat = dog > cow ≫ horse. Lung strips of sheep, cat, and dog had good reproducibility and consistency for assaying bronchoconstriction and bronchodilator drugs. Lung strips from cattle produced highly variable responses between tissue pairs and between animals. Equine lung strips failed to respond to drugs or antigens. Parenchyma strips of cat, dog, and sheep therefore provide excellent models in which to study bronchodilator and antianaphylactic compounds. © 1979.
