摘要
In three ponerine ant genera studied in tropical Asia strategies of recruitment are closely correlated to the species' predatory behavior and nesting habits. Harpegnathos saltator, Pachycondyla tridentata, and P. tesserinoda use individualistic strategies based on optical and chemical orientation, respectively. In these species communication systems are either lacking or weakly developed. In the genus Leptogenys we observed cooperative hunting strategies of increasing complexity, which are coordinated by chemical communication. Within Leptogenys we observed group and mass predators as well as solitary hunting species, which are all ecologically well separated. Some mass hunting species of Leptogenys have developed typical army ant habits concerning their predatory, migratory, and nesting behavior.
