摘要
Field observations of the territorial acridid Ligurotettix coquilletti, revealed the importance of territory ownership in contest resolution and in determining the dominance of males. An experiment in which males were paired on the territories of one of two matched individuals further substantiated the role of ownership in determining an individual's dominance at a particular site by demonstrating that, in general, (1) each of the two males won the contest according to which was the owner, and (2) the contests escalated if the intruder disregarded the other's ownership, possibly as a result, of intruder-misperception. However, other factors, such as physical strength (resource holding potential) as signalled by visual and acoustic displays, probably influenced the outcomes of contests as well. © 1991 The Association for the Study of Animal Behaviour.
