OPTICAL-ABSORPTION OF AMORPHOUS WO3 AND BINDING STATE OF TUNGSTEN

Electrochromic WO3 films in well-defined colouration states were characterized by electron spectroscopy for chemical analysis (ESCA) and optical and electrical measurements. The relationship between optical density and injected charge has been confirmed by optical spectroscopy for evaporated amorphous WO3 films. Changes from WO3 to hydrogen tungsten bronze were traced with the aid of electrical measurements to determine the introduced charge. The change in electronic structure from W6+ to the light-absorbing species W5+ was proved by ESCA by chemical shifts of the 4f doublet. Using a new deconvolution procedure, it was possible to correlate the ratio [W5+] [Wtot] quantitatively with injected charge and therefore with the optical density of electrochromic WO3. © 1990.
