摘要
Nymphs and adults of the leafhopper Paraphlepsius irroratus were equally efficient in acquiring the clover phyllody mycoplasmalike organism (CP-MLO) from infected Trifolium repens. The number of leafhoppers that became inoculative was dependent on the length of the acquisition access period and on the plant species used as the inoculum source. The median incubation period of the pathogen in the insect was 33.5 days. Percentage transmission by P. irroratus was dependent on length of the inoculation access period and on the host plant species used. Infectivity assays showed CP-MLO to be present in several internal organs and tissues of the leafhopper. The pathogen had no apparent effect on the fecundity or longevity of inoculative leafhoppers. Nine species of plants are reported as new experimental hosts of CP-MLO. Transmission of the pathogen to some plant species appeared to be dependent on the leafhopper vector species used. Frozen whole leafhoppers, stored at -70-degrees-C, were found to be an effective means for long-term preservation of CP-MLO.
