SATISFACTION WITH REAL AND SIMULATED JOBS IN RELATION TO PERSONALITY-VARIABLES AND DRUG-USE

68 young adult male industrial workers, selected in terms of reported drug use, were given a battery of job satisfaction and personality questionnaires (e.g., Sensation Seeking Scale, Eysenck Personality Inventory). 36 of these Ss also were hired to work individually at a repetitive task in a laboratory job simulation for 2-5 wks, and questionnaires were given to assess reactions to the simulated job (Profile of Mood States, Faces Test, and 2 scales from the Job Descriptive Index). Neuroticism scores were negatively correlated with satisfaction in both job settings. A comparison of drug users and nonusers revealed no major differences with regard to either real or simulated job satisfaction. The results provide empirical support for the validity of a laboratory approach, in that the general pattern of relationships observed in the field data was also observed in the laboratory data.
