ULTRASTRUCTURE OF CELLS ASSOCIATED WITH EXCAVATION OF CALCIUM-CARBONATE SUBSTRATES BY BORING SPONGES

摘要
Boring sponges excavate calcium carbonate substrates by chemical and mechanical methods. Transmission electron microscopy of the etching areas of 11 species indicates that the etching cell has the capacity for protein synthesis, secretion, absorption and intracellular digestion. Morphological similarities between etching cells and osteoclasts are discussed, and a mechanism for chemical dissolution of calcium carbonate substrates by etching cells is proposed. © 1979, Marine Biological Association of the United Kingdom.
