MOLECULAR-DYNAMICS STUDY OF LOW-ENERGY AR SCATTERING BY THE NI(001) SURFACE

The scattering of low-energy Ar atoms from a Ni(001) surface has been investigated using a Lennard-Jones two-body interatomic potential in a molecular dynamics simulation. Typical rare gas-metal surface scattering patterns, i.e. diffuse, lobular and classical rainbows, are obtained and new insights are gained regarding the mechanisms of superelastic collisions. The formation of the lobular patterns is shown to be due to the different ways in which tangential and normal momentum are exchanged with the surface. The energy accommodation coefficient was also investigated and shown to be strongly dependent on surface temperature for atoms with low incident energies.
