摘要：

The impact of controlled exothermic reactions on the sphere of materials processing is discussed. Although self-propagating high-temperature synthesis (SHS) has applications in sintering, densification, metallurgy, welding, coatings, and powder synthesis it is estimated that only 3-5% of its possible uses have been realized. Present applications are reviewed.
