DYNAMIC MECHANICAL SPECTROSCOPY OF BLENDS OF BISPHENOL-A POLYCARBONATE WITH STYRENE ACRYLONITRILE COPOLYMERS

Solid state dynamic mechanical data form the basis of a discussion of fundamental aspects for melt-compounded and subsequently melt-processed blends of bisphenol-A polycarbonate with styrene-acrylonitrile copolymers. The blends show properties classically associated with an immiscible system but major differences in spectra relate to morphological differences between compression- and injection-moulded samples, copolymer composition being relatively unimportant. Co-continuity of phases is shown to be related to processing conditions. Temperature-frequency data highlight the effects of morphology exemplified by the introduction of complex plane plots; some implications of the observations with respect to modelling and other mechanical relaxation data are considered. © 1990.
