This is the first in a series of articles that attempts to delineate the current state of the art of computer usage in chemical education. The articles will appear regularly under the editorship of John W. Moore and Ronald W. Collins. Although each of the articles will describe the latest developments in a given area of educational computing, the needs and background of readers who have little or no computer expertise will be accommodated. The editors'intention is to be, as one of the new computer-hobbyist magazines bills itself, Understandable for beginners... interesting for experts."."
