The direct involvement of clays as natural catalysts in promoting, at low temperatures, the transformation of dispersed organic matter into liquid and gaseous hydrocarbons is the subject of increasing interest. This review focuses on the direct participation of clay mineral catalysis in petroleum formation and maturation and begins with a brief summary of some of the basic organic geochemistry of petroleum formation. -from Author
