Procedures for the isolation of ur-1 mutants have been described. The complementation analysis has permitted the classification of the mutants into 3 groups a, b and c. Mutants ur-1a and ur-1b are able to complement each other. Mutants ur-1c do not complement the mutants of the other 2 groups. A fine structure map has been made. It is seen that mutants of groups a and c are mapped in the region arbitrarely indicated as the left of the region ur-1, while those of group b occupy a small region to the right. The complementation map and the genetic map are in favor of the existence, at the ur-1 locus, of the least two genes governing two distinct polypeptides. The results, taken together, suggest that these two genes belong to single transcription unit, and also that there exist interaction between the products of the genes. © 1969 Springer-Verlag.
