AMBIGUITIES AND BREAKDOWN CONFIGURATIONS OF UNITARY GAUGE

The unitary gauge, used for revealing the particle content of spontaneously broken gauge theories, is shown not to fix the gauge uniquely, even after any unbroken gauge symmetries are taken care of. There are discrete ambiguities, which can largely be removed by giving a more precise gauge condition, and continuous ambiguities, which can occur in configurations that cannot be represented smoothly in the unitary gauge (breakdown configurations). Examples of breakdown configurations are instanton-type fields interpolating between topologically distinct vacua. © 1978.
