ULTRAVIOLET SPECTRA OF CHLORONITROBENZENES IN TETRAHYDROFURAN AND IN CYCLOHEXANE

The u.v. spectra of eight chlorine-substituted mononitrobenzenes in tetrahydrofuran and in cyclohexane are reported. The assignments of the absorption bands are discussed and the electronic and sterio effects of chlorine substitution evaluated. Evidence of specific complex formation involving tetrahydrofuran and the nitro compound is inconclusive but the existence of hydrogen bonding between the aromatic ring hydrogens of the nitro compound and the ether is indicated. © 1969.
