IMPEDANCE CHARACTERISTICS OF ANODIC OXIDE-FILMS FORMED ON NIAL IN MOLTEN NA2CO3

Impedance spectroscopy was employed to study anodic oxide films at the NiAl/molten Na2CO3 interface at 1000-degrees-C and 1 atm CO2 using a standard polarization cell with an alumina-sheathed Pt, CO/CO2, Na2CO3 reference electrode and a platinum counterelectrode. This system does not anodize easily; in most samples the anodic current was shunted through NiO nodules that formed on the surface of the aluminided nickel specimens. Impedance behavior of successfully anodized samples in molten sodium carbonate at the rest potential was consistent with the continued growth of barrier-type Al2O3 at short times (< 25 h) and with the formation of a porous Al2O3 layer for longer times (> 45 h).
