DIRECT OBSERVATION OF STRUCTURAL FEATURES AND DEFECTS IN COMPLEX OXIDES BY 2-DIMENSIONAL LATTICE IMAGING

Electron optical observations of several different mixed oxides of niobium having structures related to those of cubic rhenium trioxide and tetragonal tungsten bronze are presented. Two dimensional lattice images of suitably oriented crystals, together with electron diffraction patterns, contain a great deal of information, some of which can be immediately interpreted in terms of structural details at the unit cell level and crystal defects. The technique provides results which are particularly relevant to the problems of nonstoichiometry and order-disorder in these systems. © 1969.
