SYNCHROTRON X-RAY ABSORPTION STUDIES ON THE 12-CROWN-4 AND 15-CROWN-5 COMPLEXES OF ANTIMONY(III) CHLORIDE

The extended X-ray absorption fine structure spectrum of powdered SbCl3.12-crown-4 has been measured at room temperature using synchrotron radiation. With the aid of standard full-matrix least-squares fitting methods and SbCl3.15-crown-5 as a model complex for extracting the amplitude and phase parameters for the Sb-Cl, Sb-O and Sb-C bonds, it was possible to show that the data are consistent with a pyramidal geometry for SbCl3 that is complexed to the macrocycle through Sb-O bonds to all four oxygen atoms.
