SELF-VULCANIZABLE RUBBER BLEND SYSTEM BASED ON EPOXIDIZED NATURAL-RUBBER AND HYPALON

It has been reported that hypalon is vulcanizable by epoxy resin. Accordingly the blend of hypalon and epoxidized natural rubber (ENR) was studied to examine the vulcanizing ability of one rubber by the functional group of another rubber. In this article the authors report the results of their studies on a hypalon-ENR blend. Since no curative was used, we designate such a system as a 'self-vulcanizable rubber blend.' Experimental data indicate that both epoxidized natural rubber and hypalon are soluble in chloroform, but the moulded blend was insoluble in the same solvent. Physical properties of the blend vulcanizate reveals that the blend shows a moderately high level of strength even without any reinforcing filler. Differential scanning calorimeter thermograms of ENR, hypalon, and the blend are presented. It is evident that the blend registers no clear cut transition.
