PREPARATION AND CHARACTERIZATION OF CONDUCTING PLASMA POLYMERS OF TETRACYANOQUINODIMETHANE (TCNQ) WITH QUINOLINE

A conducting plasma polymer has been found by plasma polymerization of tetracyanoquinodimethane (TCNQ) with quinoline. Plasma-polymerized quinoline and plasma-polymerized TCNQ alone each exhibit a very low conductivity ( < 10(-12) OMEGA-1 cm-1 for quinoline and 10(-9) OMEGA-1 cm-1 for TCNQ), whereas a value of about 10(-5) OMEGA-1 cm-1 has been measured for plasma polymers prepared from a mixture of TCNQ and quinoline. The electronic structure of these plasma polymers has been characterized in situ by ultraviolet photoelectron spectroscopy (UPS) and X-ray photoelectron spectroscopy (XPS). The electrical conductivity at room temperature of these plasma polymers was measured by the four-probe method. The temperature dependence of the conductivity was measured by the two-probe method.
