The formation of well-ordered Langmuir-Blodgett (LB) films of a peripherally octa(pentyloxy)-substituted palladium phthalocyanine is reported. Stacking interactions of the ring systems in the LB film are revealed by the W-Vis spectrum. A layer separation of 21.3 Angstrom is found by small angle X-ray diffraction and is compatible with the assumption of phthalocyanine rings in an edge-on configuration, nearly perpendicular to the substrate plane. The most impressive demonstration of the high order in these LB films is the successful preparation of (gold/phthalocyanine LB film/gold) sandwich structures with LB film thicknesses down to ten monolayers, resulting in symmetrical current/voltage curves.
