HOW UNIVERSAL ARE THE GLASSY STATES IN FERROELECTRICS AND OTHER MATERIALS WITH A STRUCTURAL PHASE-TRANSITION

Investigations at 18 different ferroelec-trics and 2 quantum paraelectrics indicate that materials with a structural phase transition show a typical glassy behavior at low temperatures if the structural phase transition temperature T is nearly equal to the Debye temperature 0^. _ c In this case, the mean energetical density P of localized states responsible for the glassy properties has a maximum. The ratio T /0p has a strong influence on the generation of localized states in different substances with a structural phase transition. © 1990, Taylor & Francis Group, LLC. All rights reserved.
