The paper considers the optimum design (maximum heat dissipation for a fixed profile area) of a convecting, rectangular fin with a step change in cross-sectional area. The optimization problem is solved using the method of Lagrange multipliers. For the profile parameter A(p)(2h/K)1/2 ranging from 10(-4) to 1, the maximum enhancement in heat dissipation is about 9% compared with the uniformly thick fin. When the heat dissipation is specified, the saving in material with a step design can be as much as 23% compared with the uniform thickness design. The design procedure is illustrated with two examples.
