INSITU HIGH-PRESSURE, HIGH-TEMPERATURE XAFS STUDIES OF CU-BASED CATALYSTS DURING METHANOL SYNTHESIS

Combined in situ x-ray absorption fine structure (XAFS) and on-line activity studies of Cu-based methanol catalysts are presented. By use of a specially designed catalytic reactor-cell, it is possible to simultaneously measure the catalytic activity and to record high quality XAFS spectra on the same catalyst sample. Both the XANES and the EXAFS results show that during high pressure synthesis conditions (220-degrees-C, 48 bar), copper is present in the metallic state with no sign of Cu1+ species. Although the ZnO is not essential for the methanol synthesis the results point to a strong influence of the ZnO on the structure of the copper phase formed. It is suggested that a two-dimensional Cu-degrees phase on the ZnO support is present under reaction conditions.
