KINETIC AND CHEMICAL EVIDENCE FOR THE PARTICIPATION OF MONONUCLEAR CATALYTIC SPECIES IN THE HOMOGENEOUS HYDROGENATION OF DIPHENYLACETYLENE PROMOTED BY AN EDGE-BRIDGED TRIRUTHENIUM CARBONYL CLUSTER COMPLEX

The edge-bridged cluster complex [Ru3(mu-H)(mu-C8H11N2)(CO)9] (1) (C8H12N2 = 1,2-diamino-4,5-dimethylbenzene) is a catalyst precursor for the selective homogeneous hydrogenation of diphenylacetylene to stilbene under very mild conditions. The binuclear ruthenium(I) akenyl derivative [Ru2(mu-C8H11N2)(mu-eta1,eta2-PhC= C(H)PhXCO)5] (2). which has been observed during the catalytic reaction, has been isolated from the reaction of 1 with diphenylacetylene; however, 2 does not react with hydrogen. These results, coupled to a kinetic study of the catalytic reaction, which follows the rate law -d[H-2]/dt = K [1] (P(H-2)), where K = 9.18 X 1 0(-3) atm-2 s-1 at 333 K, suggest that the catalytic species is mononuclear.
