Cryosurgery is one of several modalities currently in widespread use for the treatment of nonmelanoma skin cancer. This review discusses its place among the other accepted methods of treatment, such as excision, curettage and cautery, radiotherapy, Mohs surgery, and immunotherapy, which are discussed elsewhere in this issue. The scientific basis for cryosurgery is described and there is detailed practical guidance on performance of cryosurgery, selection of patients, and the outcome of treatment.
