POLARON AND BIPOLARON FORMATION ON ISOLATED-MODEL THIOPHENE OLIGOMERS IN SOLUTION

摘要
Polarons (radical cations) and bipolarons (dications) have been quantitatively and successively generated on isolated model thiophene oligomers nT (n = 3, 4, 5, 6) in solution and characterized by Vis-NIR absorption and ESR spectroscopies. The optical spectra of the nT.+ and nT++ species, respectively produced in the first and second steps of the stoichiometric FeCl3 oxidation of neutral nT molecules, exhibit extremely narrow and well-resolved bands in the visible and near-infrared region. It is shown that these non-interacting oligomers, particularly the hexamer 6T, can be considered as model systems for doped polythiophene.
