RARE-EARTH BASED SUPERCONDUCTORS BY ORGANIC CARBONATE COPRECIPITATION

Ceramic superconductors of the compositions YBa2Cu3Ox (normal composition) and Y0.95Ba2Cu3.05Ox (copper rich) have been synthesised by coprecipitation technique using organic carbonates in the presence of soluble polymers like polyvinyl alcohol, polyvinyl pyrrolidone or polyacrylic acid. Both normal and copper rich compositions showed sharp superconducting transitions at 94K. Critical current densities for normal and copper rich samples at 77K were found to be 80A/cm2 and 110 A/cm2 respectively. Hysteresis loops were not observed at 77K within the magnetic field of 40 Oe and both the samples showed high magnetisation. Microwave induced d.c. voltages were observed to be 70 μv and 50 μv for normal and copper rich samples. The increase in Jc, magnetisation and decrease in microwave induced d.c. voltage in copper rich samples may be due to the increase in hole concentration caused by the partial replacement of Y by Cu. © 1990.
