THE indications for computed tomography (CT) in patients with low back and leg pain are expanding as the resolution of the scanners improves. CT is already the procedure of choice for diagnosing lumbar stenosis1,2 and facet joint disease.3 In 25 patients scanned in our institution, we have found CT effective in diagnosing unoperated cases of herniated nucleus pulposus. The purpose of this paper is to describe the technique for extending CT to the diagnosis of lumbar disk herniations and to emphasize its value to the surgeon and the patient.
