Communication: Polar liquid crystals with strongly positive dielectric anisotropies are of continuing interest to the display industry because they help to lower both the operating voltage and the total power consumption of LCDs in portable devices. Fluorinated heterocyclic materials (Figure, right, MG = mesogenic group) are shown here to exhibit improved mesophase properties and higher dielectric and optical anisotropies than commonly used materials based on purely fluorine substituted moieties (Figure, left).
