PROPERTIES OF AN ELECTRON BUBBLE APPROACHING THE SURFACE OF LIQUID-HELIUM

摘要
We have studied the T=0 properties of the localized state of an excess electron in liquid He4 using a density-functional method. The binding energy, radius, and surface tension of the electron bubble in bulk liquid-4He are calculated. The modifications on the bubble properties as the electron approaches the He surface are investigated. The calculated energy barrier for thermal emission of the electron from the surface into the vacuum is found to be in agreement with the experimental value. We have calculated the escape rates for electron tunneling through the surface layer and found the results in semiquantitative agreement with the experiments. © 1994 The American Physical Society.
