CLATHRATE HYDRATES OF CYCLOPROPANE

Two stable clathrate hydrates of cyclopropane have been demonstrated by measuring the dissociation pressures of these hydrates vs. temperature. The hydrate stable below -16.01° and between 1.46 and 16.21° has the formula C3H6·8.0H2O and is the structure I, 12-Å cubic hydrate. This identification was confirmed by the X-ray powder pattern. The hydrate stable between -16.01 and 1.46° has the formula C3H6·17.0H2O and is the structure II, 17-Å cubic hydrate. These hydrate formulas were confirmed by measuring the dissociation pressure at 0° as a function of water activity. The thermochemical constants of the two hydrates have been determined. The vapor pressure of cyclopropane has been measured between 4 and 20°. The solubility of cyclopropane in water has been measured between O and 23°. The solubility of cyclopropane is discussed in terms of the gas being surrounded by icebergs containing the cavities that occur in the hydrates. The iceberg sizes are calculated on the basis of this model.
