Constructed a category, a ratio estimation, and 3 magnitude scales from observations of 14 undergraduates who judged the oiliness of a geometric dilution series of n-heptanol. Oiliness varied with concentration and had a short subjective range for a fairly typical stimulus concentration range. Ratio scales were stable and resembled power functions with exponents of .184 to .259. Odor oiliness is similar to odor intensity and pleasantness in exhibiting a direct relationship between stimulus and subjective ranges. Oiliness does not appear to be prothetic; results support an earlier suggestion that range size may account for the mixed evidence concerning metatheticity.
