Optically active alpha-trifluoromethylbenzyl derivatives as new chiral dopants for ferroelectric liquid crystals (FLCs) were synthesized utilizing optically active 4,4,4-trifluoro-3-(4-methoxyphenyl)butanoic acid prepared by optical resolution procedures. The magnitudes of spontaneous polarization (Ps) and the response time depended on the type of the linkage between the optically active block and core blocks.
