THEORIES OF DEVELOPMENT AND POLITICS OF THE POSTMODERN - EXPLORING A BORDER ZONE

This article explores three crossings of a border zone: this zone is constituted by the potential intersections between critical development theory and the post-modern interruption. The three 'crossings' analysed are: the troubled conceptualizations of centres and peripheries, including a brief consideration of the global dimension of development debates; questions of agency, power and resistance, including some comments on class and marginality as relevant in peripheral societies; and differential meanings of democracy and socialism. The illustrations used in the analysis largely come from Latin America, and the perspective adopted can be represented in terms of one possible interpretation of post-Marxism.
