EXCHANGE COUPLING AND MAGNETIZATION IN BCC-(001) FE/CU MULTILAYERS BY A TIGHT-BINDING LMTO-ASA METHOD

摘要
A first-principles tight-binding linear muffin-tin orbital method in the atomic sphere approximation has been applied to describe the magnetic properties of bcc-(001) Fe/Cu multilayers. Clusters calculations are performed on structural models with periodic boundary conditions. It is found that the crossover from parallel to antiparallel exchange coupling only takes place if the amount of monolayers per Fe slab exceeds a critical value. There is no crossover for 4 Fe/n Cu multilayers for n up to 10, whereas it does appear for m Fe/10 Cu if m exceeds 13 and for 16 Fe/n Cu if n exceeds 7 (in agreement with experiments).
