The anisotropy of magnetic susceptibility (AMS) has been measured on synthetic cylindrical samples with magnetic grain sizes of 20-38 μm, 10-20 μm, and 0.5 μm. The length to diameter ratio has been progressively reduced by slicing the cylinders and the AMS determined. Sample-shape controls AMS ellipsoid orientations when magnetic grain size is small. Such sample-shape controls may explain some of the anomalous AMS results which have been reported for deep-sea sediments and must be considered when interpreting magnetic fabric. © 1979.
