This woek presents experimentally measured track-lengths of the fission products from 252Cf in three solid state track detectors (mica, Lexan and cellulose acetate) and a theoretical method for track-length computation in any solid state track detector. The experimental work lays stress on the evaluation of the surface-etching and over-etching corrections which have to be applied to the observed track-lengths in order to obtain the true track-lengths. The theoretically computed track-lengths for the fission products and other heavy ions of varying initial energies in different solid dielectrics are in good agreement with the corresponding experimental values measured by other authors. An empirical relation between the density of the medium and the critical stopping-power for that medium is also presented. © 1979.
