摘要
Time-compensated celestial orientation has been demonstrated in sand-beach isopods and amphipods, but there are reasons to suppose that they cannot rely on this ability. T. punctatus is a sand-beach isopod which successfully orients on the beach by day or night. We tested its ability to orient by sun, moon, wind and slope of the substrate. The only repeated responses we found were to slope. T. punctatus can orient to slopes as small as 1 °. It moves uphill when the substrate is wet, downhill when it is dry. We suggest that in the field, T. punctatus usually orients by the slope of the beach. © 1968.
