A Si-29 NMR study was carried out on different amorphous silica, using magic-angle spinning and proton decoupling with and without cross polarization, to obtain the surface concentration of hydroxyl groups. The samples were prepared at various stages of dehydration and with different methods of rehydration. It was found that the fraction of geminal hydroxyl silanol sites for all these samples is constant within the confidence limits of the accuracy of our data, and this indicates an equilibrium in the distribution of the hydroxyl groups at the silica surface.
